EDMONTON - First, let’s talk about the flashy objects that have gone into making Voyageur, the assembled-from-Canadiana guitar that broadcaster Jowi Taylor is bringing to Edmonton Thursday evening as part of his Six String Nation presentation.
Hockey fans will be excited to discover that a portion of one of Paul Henderson’s hockey sticks from the ’72 Summit series is there, as well as gold from one of Rocket Richard’s Stanley Cup rings. Political junkies will no doubt perk up to hear that an oar belonging to Pierre Trudeau is also part of the project. Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s mission patch is part of the lining for the guitar case.
A strange idea, isn’t it, to take a number of items that make up our national mythology, and put them together as a guitar? That’s exactly what Taylor, an award-winning broadcaster, wanted to do. And yes, people did look at him kind of funny.
“There were a few people who thought I was kind of crazy,” he admits over the phone from his Toronto home. “Some just didn’t get it at all. Once I started to get things like Trudeau’s oar, people actually started to get it a little, though there are still others who don’t quite fathom it. It’s a hard thing to explain in just a few sentences.”
Taylor came up with the idea of Voyageur in 1995, when the Quebec Referendum dominated headlines. It took him a number of years to gather what would turn out to be 64 pieces of bone, metal, wood, stone and fabric, tangible symbols of our shared culture, from every province and territory. He passed them over to Nova Scotia luthier George Riszanyi to build into a playable instrument. Since it was finished in 2006, it has been in the hands of a host of famous (Bruce Cockburn, Stephen Fearing, Ron Sexsmith) and not-so-famous guitarists.
In Edmonton it will be played by Mike McDonald of Jr. Gone Wild, Bobby Cameron and The Command Sisters, and used by Taylor in a presentation that addresses the problems we have with culture in this country, and how such things as “NHL hockey and Tim Hortons have colonized what it means to be Canadian.”
“I’ve done all kinds of events across this country and the guitar ignites something in people. I get stories from them. I think there’s this genuine impulse for Canadians to want to have something that is complicated and nuanced, not jingoistic, that explains their feelings about the country.”
This is where we flip over to the less flashy objects that the guitar contains, the ones that don’t hold marquee name value but go much deeper. Like the Patuanak moose shin that came from Métis artist and songwriter Don Freed of Saskatchewan, or the piece of wood from Nova Scotia’s Home For Coloured Children, which was established in the early 1900s by James Robinson Johnston, the province’s first black lawyer. Mastodon ivory from the Yukon, whale baleen from Nunavut are small but essential reminders of the disparate histories that this country contains.
One of the items most cherished by Taylor is a knife gifted to him by the family of Joe Lebobe, a champion oyster shucker from P.E.I. and a member of the Mi’kmaq First Nation. Taylor said the family was proud of their famous relative, but somewhat bemused at Taylor’s excitement. While it might not seem like the most important part of the guitar, Taylor believes that it has as much significance as Trudeau’s oar or Henderson’s stick.
“This is fundamentally what the project is about,” he insists. “I’m thrilled that I have all of those other things, but they don’t mean anything more than other stories told by people in communities that nobody ever talks about, but who are nonetheless fundamental to the fabric of who we are.”
The guitar has taken up much of Taylor’s time since it first appeared at Canada Day celebrations in 2006. It’s still a bit of a struggle to make people understand what the project is, and the importance of knitting together a shared culture in such a sparsely populated land.
“At the end of this people always come up and want to share their stories. I love to hear them, but more importantly I hope that they tell each other, because it’s something that we need to start doing. We can’t just depend on Tim Hortons and NHL hockey as shorthand for who we are. It’s just not good enough.”

Doors for The Fonda Theatre open 6:30 p.m. Saturday, November 9. The concert begins 7:30 p.m.
The Bass Player LIVE! clinics and exhibitors will be located at S.I.R. Studios on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, November 9, and Sunday, November 10. Bass players of all ages, levels and styles are invited to attend.
“Bass Player LIVE! is the biggest and baddest bass event of the year,” says Bass Player editor Brian Fox. “And this year’s lineup is our heaviest yet. When it comes to hard rock bass playing, Geezer Butler wrote the book. That he continues to perform with every bit the raw intensity of his early days in Black Sabbath is an inspiration for players of all ages and all styles. With the Stray Cats, Lee Rocker took the upright bass—already one of the coolest instruments ever—and somehow made it even more hip, slapping the snot out of it to codify the sound of rockabilly bass.
"To our ears, Tal Wilkenfeld personifies the bright future of rock bass. From her work with Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock and Joe Walsh to her fleet-fingered solo work, Tal’s refreshing fusion of jazz, soul, funk, and rock is something we’ve had our ears and eyes on for a long time now. We’re thrilled and honored to have these three artists anchor an evening of amazing performances.”

Misha Mansoor & Periphery | NYC
In the depths below the Best Buy stage, our guide leads us through a labyrinth of passageways populated by flight cases, half assembled gear, merch boxes, and musicians intently focused on warm up techniques. Ink punctuates flesh, an unspoken uniform.
We cross the main stage, piles of drum kits in one corner, wall of amplifiers stacked in a rock slide of potential noise stage center. To our right opens the pit, a clearing of open floor, shadowy form of the sound man backlit against work lights.
Stage left is a rack of gear labeled: MISHA MANSOOR.
We pass by. Getting close.
We pass by. Getting close.
The 'Blue Zone' is a further maze of dressing rooms, band names printed neatly on each door: Periphery, Animals As Leaders, The Ocean, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation.
My brain registers polyrhythmic bursts of percussion from semi-darkness, played with an almost inhuman metronomic skill. Matt Garska, drummer for AAL, looks up from his practice pad, recognizes me, comes over to catch up and check out Misha's guitar.
I guess word has spread.
I want to try a Rick Toone, but his body woods always look like he got them from a barn that was recently on fire. I have to say this is probably the best looking Toone that I've seen, even though they're all a bit ugly imho. I love the silver color and the body shape and hardware color makes it seem a bit more subdued than some of his other creations.— Joe Heisler
Zero txt reception in the bowels of the city, but at some point, Misha steps out of the dark. His form is unmistakable, although we've never met. A function of the lives we lead, where so many images online make anonymity impossible. At least in certain circles.
Rock star presence. Boyish excitement. A handshake and hug, gesture toward the SKB iSeries waterproof case: "I guess this is the machine?"
There is much to be done.
We launch into the simplicity of string changes. Test the action. Install different string gauges. Play through a Roland Cube , then his full rig (in-ear monitors). Explore alternate tunings: "The attack is amazing. This guitar will solve my tuning issues with 'Scarlet'. I'm going to play it tonight."
Take a moment to appreciate that statement.
Something like an eleven band lineup. Onstage live in a few hours. No sound check. Totally unfamiliar guitar.
Honestly I have never played anything like this before, in some ways I feel like this is Guitar 2.0. Everything about the guitar, from its shape to hardware and control placement is very deliberate. A truly ergonomic guitar, and thanks to the Swamp Ash body and fully Aluminum (Element™) Neck, it has this insane attack to it.The pickups were custom made for the instrument by Steve Blucher from Dimarzio, as the Aluminum neck gives the guitar certain tonal properties that are different from a wood necked guitar.Very excited to keep using this on tour, it really is something else!— Misha MansoorIt was sweet to see you play it the other night in Toronto man! I yelled out Rick Toone before the show too lol— Zac Tiessen
Steve Blucher is backstage. Another unmistakable figure, long gray ponytail tied back, bag of tools under his arm. He has been working on Javier Reyes' guitar.
I'm glad we get a chance to catch up. Steve deserves equal praise for the sound of this guitar — after evaluation, it was my decision to give the guitar to Misha with the custom DiMarzios installed. In all fairness, it is difficult to compete with a pickup system that has been designed specifically for a new type of guitar.
Another risk I took. Just like surprising Misha with an instrument he had truly never seen before. The lead up photos you have seen on this website are exactly as much information as I had given him during the build.
I like him already. He's cool, and chill, open, but focused. A social intelligence combined with business acumen. And more technically aware of guitar design nuances than almost any other musician I have met. It felt good — and honoring — for the effort we have invested into the S2 to be really understood and appreciated.
Misha, thank you.
We pledge allegiance to the Alien species that instructed Rick on making this...— Angriburdz RulzI, for one, welcome our new alien overlord.— Christian SimonsBest whatever it is I've ever seen. No doubt.— Luigi Beatrice

I'm excited to meet Misha Mansoor in NYC tomorrow morning. We've been corresponding for some months, so it will be great to finally catch up in person. He is on tour with Periphery...we're meeting up backstage at the Best Buy Theater.
This is the very first S2 guitar. Totally tricked out and customized for Misha. It's been an intense adventure to get to this point in time. Thank you for traveling with me.

Tosin Abasi
Premier Guitar & Tosin Abasi (Blur on tour)
VIDEO: Premier Guitar's Rig Rundown with Javier Reyes & Tosin Abasi. Tosin discusses Blur 8-string extended range guitar beginning at the 8:40 mark.
Rebecca Dirks is my favorite music tech interviewer. She always floats to the surface, no matter the strength of the personality she is matched against. Bemused, and just so slightly detached, she is often more informed about signal chain than the actual artist. I love how she catches musicians off guard.
Zing!
It's simply great on-camera journalism.
So I was delighted when Brett Eversole sent me a link to Premier Guitar's Rig Rundown with Animals As Leaders onstage in Chicago. Would she pin them against the (metaphorical) wall — or would Javier & Tosin hold their own?
Tosin gave a gracious interview, clearly articulating his rig and also the unique features of 'Blur'. It was thrilling to see the instrument in professional context, part of our ongoing efforts to evaluate the technology as he travels with the guitar on tour.
Tour discussions with Tosin Abasi and Evan Brewer have provided incredibly invaluable insight, allowing me to adapt, adjust, and extend my thinking as a luthier.
I only wish Javier's Viceroy 8-string guitar had not been stolen. We shared a moment at AAL Camp, lamenting the loss of that guitar and the unique sound it would have brought to Animals As Leaders.
Perhaps one day it will reappear.
Tosin uses 'Blur' to play a song called New Eden which features notes in the extended range section of the fretboard, beyond the integrated capo. Note how he has adapted to reaching the controls via both hands. My proprietary 3-D control surface allows him flexibility to prioritize which hand remains in contact with the guitar during play.

Tosin Abasi & Blur | "New Eden" (Live)
VIDEO: Tosin Abasi plays 'New Eden' live for the first time: Roseland Ballroom, New York City (2/15/2013).
One of the things I noticed right away about Blur 8-String Extended Range Guitar is all of the technologies integrate, synthesizing into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Neck, bridges, tuner, electronics, body resonance.
When I tested Blur in the shop, my ears were excited...a reaction Tosin had as well, when the instrument arrived. The playing experience is very different from a conventional guitar. 'Hyper-real' is how he described the sound, and I love that description.
Notes blossom with immediacy and intimacy, spreading sound ripples throughout the playing space. Highs are sweet, distinct, chiming, beautiful. Lows are powerful, quick, deep, clear. Lows and highs are balanced. When he emailed me early this morning, sharing the first live performance clip with the guitar, I was awestruck by the tonality. Gorgeous.

Hey Rick,Listening to the video I realized, with this instrument, it is possible to finally hear the full extent of Tosin's astonishing playing technique. He has such mastery over dynamics. In this live performance of New Eden I feel the emotion in his playing. He and the guitar are truly working together as one — the highest objective to strive for as a luthier. So honored.
Hope that you are well!
This is a video of me playing 'blur' on stage for the first time. I am happy to own such a unique and inspiring instrument. It really has such personality. Evocative.
Hope you like the clip.
Cheers,
Tosin
Tosin was playing his Ibanez all night, clean/distorted and so on....but when he pulled out Blur for that one tune....WoW....I was immediately struck with clarity. The low notes were so round and even, the high notes rang like a bell.I was sorry to have missed Tosin, Javier, and Matt when Animals As Leaders played Philadelphia last week. It would have been so exciting to have seen them do this live. But it was Valentine's Day, plans with Masi, and I am in love.
Keep doing what you're doing, because it's way ahead of the rest!

That is just wrong, only because he has lots of fans doesn't mean he is the best guitarist. Try looking at John Petrucci's solo's and Tomo's solos and just admit it This guy should be on the top. As far as technicality and discipline he is the best. He shows his mastery in music theory and the tone of his guitar is just awesome in every song he plays. And again... Steve Vai could play whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted with ease. John Petrucci was very good but was obviously putting a lot of effort into things. Joe Satriani was a step up from Petrucci - just a pity that the guys he had in his band were just like background noise. 4% 6Eddie Van Halen Eddie Van Halen is the best technical guitarist of all time. He can do things that only a few others can do. Steve Vai is right up there with him, but Eddie gets the crown by a nose. All right, whomever thinks that Eddie isn't the most technically proficient guitarist ever is an Ass. Rolling stone even ranked him no.2 after Hendrix saying and I quote "Eddie is the most technically proficient Guitarist that ever lived, but hendrix had much, much more soul!. " His technical innovations are unrivaled; He revolutionized tapping, used a power drill at the beginning of the song "Poundcake", and used the tuning dials on the guitar not only to adjust but used them in the Instrumental "Cathedral" to sound like a synthesizer. He also had his guitars made of chainsaw parts, and other weird shit not normally used giving him that unique sound that no matter if you can pick like him, or play as fat as him. 2John Petrucci
Who the hell is Tomo Milicevic compared to him? He is just very popular and no matter what the question is his fans vote for him. That is just wrong, only because he has lots of fans doesn't mean he is the best guitarist. Try looking at John Petrucci's solo's and Tomo's solos and just admit it
This guy should be on the top. As far as technicality and discipline he is the best. He shows his mastery in music theory and the tone of his guitar is just awesome in every song he plays. And again... Who the heck is Tomo Milicevic?
+4Proof that God exists!... Cant believe he isn't in the top.

+6People who would put Matt Bellemy up there obviously have no knowledge of the guitar what so ever.
+1obvious choice is obvious. Matt Bellamy's good too. Who's Tomo Millicevic with 47. 3 votes? Oh and Tom Morello should be in the top 5. TECHNICAL GUITARIST!

5Steve Vai
+1Technique is about control of one's instrument; this is about playing precisely as well as quickly. And in songs like 'Tender Surrender' and 'Call it Sleep' Vai's ability to control every tiny noise of his instrument is mind-blowing. And this is still technique, rather than musicianship or artistry or whatever.
Matt belamy ahead of vai? This is ridiculous
Saw Steve Vai, Joe Satriani & John Petrucci live in a G3 concert. Steve Vai could play whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted with ease.
John Petrucci was very good but was obviously putting a lot of effort into things. Joe Satriani was a step up from Petrucci - just a pity that the guys he had in his band were just like background noise.

6Eddie Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen is the best technical guitarist of all time.
His technical innovations are unrivaled;
He revolutionized tapping, used a power drill at the beginning of the song "Poundcake", and used the tuning dials on the guitar not only to adjust but used them in the Instrumental "Cathedral" to sound like a synthesizer. He also had his guitars made of chainsaw parts, and other weird shit not normally used giving him that unique sound that no matter if you can pick like him, or play as fat as him. You will never duplicate his playing. EVER!.

I agree... The ability that he had to use harmonics make a guitar squeal was amazing.
Just cover some of his song and you will understand!

Well I've seen guys that are just as technical as mustaine but no one more technical(ever heard a song called rattlehead? Or maybe this day we fight? ) but in addition to this he also does vocals which I've never seen the other ultra technical guitarists do so I'll pick mustaine. Also I feel it's worth mentioning that I haven't seen anyone surpass him in any level of guitar playing ability(not just technical ability)but there are tons of guys who are as good as him in most or al areas but they don't do vocals. Although I'll admit that I'm biased because megadeth us my favourite band and I don't play guitar so I might be mistaken. But I'm stil going with mustaine.

The only reason this guy isn't number one is that he isn't particularly well know. Google 'Animals As Leaders' and listen to a song or two. He is one of the most, insanely, ridiculously technical guitarists ever, along with Jeff Loomis and Ron Jarzombek.

Kirk hammett is not good technical guitarist a great technical guitarist is Broderick he's not my favorite but in technical view he almost beat anyone Petrucci is another great technical guitarist My favorite guitarist is Mustaine I don't vote for him so stop putting Hammett and Synyster Emo
Chris broderick must be at top 5, just hear

22Ron Jarzombek
This dude must be the most incredibly, unbelievably, inhumanly technical guitarist ever. He synchronises his guitar with scenes from movies and cartoons (see 'A Wild Hare by Spastic Ink- synchronised to Bambi, or 'Cereal Mouse' by the same band) He writes loads of stuff in 12 tone, which is one of the most difficult ways of writing, and he does this thing where he assigns notes to letters of the alphabet and spells out words, like his name for example. The songs still sound amazing after all this!
He is the most unbelievably awesome guitarist ever. He has written an album with 45 songs, which can be played from any song and still sound great, and sounds like one 45 minute song if played from the start. He has written an album of songs synchronised to scenes from movies. And, he writes everything in twelve tone, a really complicated system of playing instruments.
